Migraine Headache Relief from Your Irvine Chiropractor

Migraine headaches can shut down your life for days. And the typical migraine painkillers provide only temporary relief while bringing unwanted side effects. If you suffer migraines in Irvine, chiropractor Dr. John Lee and his associate doctors can help you get immediate, natural, long-term pain relief by resolving the underlying causes of your headaches.

What Causes Migraine Headaches?

Although migraines are not fully understood by science yet, there are many things we have discovered. Reducing the frequency and severity of migraine headaches depends upon addressing the root causes of the pain, not just covering up the symptoms. Our chiropractor will focus on diagnosing your triggers and then provide migraine relief treatment that reduces or eliminates them. Some potential causes include:

Trigeminal nerve irritation

This nerve controls function and feeling of the head and face. Often, a misalignment of neck vertebrae, either from poor posture or injury, can pinch this nerve, playing a role in migraine headaches. In fact, many patients who had earlier suffered a whiplash neck injury reported an increase in migraine headaches afterward.

Chemical imbalances

Sleep patterns, nutrition and hormonal issues may also interfere with nervous system function in a way that causes migraines.

Chiropractic Care for Natural Migraine Relief Treatment

For many of our patients, chiropractic care has provided welcome, lasting relief for their migraine headaches. After a complete exam to determine the root problems behind your headaches, our doctors design a comprehensive, individual treatment plan that may include:

Chiropractic spinal adjustments

Alleviating spinal misalignments, particularly in the neck, can often eliminate migraines. Pinched nerves are released, which enables them to properly regulate pain signals, circulation, hormonal fluctuations, etc.

Nutrition and Lifestyle Counseling

Migraine sufferers usually know a host of triggers that can set them off on day of pain and suffering. Our chiropractor helps people pinpoint their individual triggers and helps them build strategies to avoid them. Some triggers include:
Chemicals and additives in processed foods and beverages
Irregular eating schedules
Poor sleep habits
Dehydration
Poor ergonomics

WHAT IS A MIGRAINE?
A migraine is a severe, intensely painful type of headache that affects many people. It usually begins with an “aura” or feeling that the migraine is coming on. Once the migraine is taking place, the pain can be a 10 out of 10 with nausea, vomiting, visual disturbances, and sensitivity to light and noise. Most people have to take some type of other-the-counter or prescription migraine medication and sleep to resolve the migraine.
WHAT CAUSES MIGRAINE?
More than 80% of headaches including migraines are cervicogenic, meaning they originate due to a problem in the cervical spine (neck). The problem is most commonly a subluxation (misalignment) of a vertebra in the upper cervical spine, usually C1, C2, or C3. Most people also have a very straight neck and forward head posture. All of this places pressure on the nerves, spinal cord, and brainstem at the top of the neck which leads to changes in blood vessel pressure and then migraine symptoms.
HOW DO YOU TREAT MIGRAINE?
We first identify if there are structural and mechanical problems in the migraine sufferer’s upper neck. If we find the likely causes, then we treat it with specific chiropractic adjustments to realign the spine at the upper neck. We will also help to restore the natural curve of the neck that is usually missing. If there is disc degeneration and compression present and associated with the problem, then spinal decompression will also be used for treatment. Class IV laser therapy may also be a part of the treatment in some cases.
DOES CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT WORK FOR MIGRAINES?
Yes, because the majority (more than 80%) of migraines are due to issues of the neck, chiropractors are experts at treating the condition. We have a high success rate in treating migraines and it is one of our specialties.
HOW CAN A CHIROPRACTOR HELP REDUCE MIGRAINE AND HEADACHE PAIN?

A chiropractor can help reduce or resolve migraines and headache pain by offering a natural, conservative treatment that does not require the use of any medications, injections, or surgery. We find that many patients who reach out to us for help have already tried the traditional medical options for treatment without long-term or lasting results. Our patients are usually able to get their migraines or headaches resolved to a minimal level or resolved completely.
